How to Play?

Reflections and Practical Advice for RPGs

We have been dedicated to playing RPGs since our childhood years. However, the older we get, the more demanding “consumers” of RPGs we become. The more knowledge we absorb in our civilian lives, the more fantastical or, conversely, realistic we want our games to be. We no longer enjoy just mindlessly rolling dice; we want to be entertained intelligently and learn something in the process. In short, our benchmark for entertainment is not a D-grade variety show on TV Nova, but rather a well-crafted historical or fantasy film.

In an effort to improve our own game, we ponder its foundations, listen to experts, and gather wisdom across the internet and elsewhere. Here you will find a selection of the best pieces we have either written ourselves or adapted from the wise.

So, what can you learn?

How to run a game as a Narrator and keep your players in suspense and thoroughly entertained.

How “Ancient Times” differed from the (post)modern era in the daily lives and inner experiences of people.

Whether it is truly necessary to use dice during gameplay.

How to evoke fear and awe at the table.

Which Narrator mistakes irritate players the most.

What player types we frequently encounter. Will you find yourself among them?
